Staining and sealing a wood fence: when and how

ValorBuilt Fence · June 2026 · 4 min read

The schedule that keeps cedar looking new, and the mistakes that shorten its life.

When

Let new cedar dry for a few weeks, then stain. After that, every two to four years depending on sun exposure. If water stops beading on the boards, it is time.

What to use

A penetrating oil-based or hybrid stain with UV protection. Film-forming products peel. Semi-transparent shows the grain; solid stain lasts longer.

How

Clean first, let it dry, then spray and back-brush. Do the posts and the bottom of the boards, which take the most water.

Questions, answered

Can I leave cedar bare?

Yes. It grays in a year or two and lasts a bit less, but many people like the look.

Do you offer staining?

Many locations do. Ask your crew at the estimate.
